Mattress Packages and Dignity Kits for Families in RHU Camps across Gaza

1,432 mattresses and 1,116 dignity kits restoring the basics of daily life for displaced families

Displacement takes more than homes. It strips families of the everyday essentials most of us never think about: a mattress to sleep on, a towel, a bar of soap. Across the Refugee Housing Unit (RHU) camps of the Gaza Strip, thousands of families who lost their homes and belongings need more than a roof they need what it takes to stay healthy, safe, and dignified.

In response, the Gaza Society for Sustainable Agriculture and Friendly Environment (SAFE) is distributing mattress packages and dignity kits to families living in RHU camps across the Gaza Strip, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme / Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP). The project is supported by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, with dignity kits co-funded by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Government of the Republic of Korea.

The Intervention in Numbers

• 1,432 mattresses for families lacking the most basic means of safe, healthy sleep
• 1,116 dignity kits containing essential hygiene and personal care items: towels, soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes, sanitary pads, and more
• Gaza-wide coverage of RHU camps across the Strip's governorates
• Documented targeting criteria that account for family size and humanitarian circumstances, prioritising female-headed households, large families, older persons, and persons with disabilities

Why Mattresses and Dignity Kits?

Because their impact goes far beyond the items themselves. A proper mattress means safe sleep and protection from cold- and damp-related illness inside shelter units. Hygiene supplies mean direct protection of public health in crowded settings where disease transmission risks run high and for women and girls in particular, they mean a baseline of privacy and dignity that displacement must never be allowed to erode.

A Distribution System Built on Fairness and Transparency

SAFE leads every stage of the project through an integrated field operation: needs assessments inside the camps, management and verification of beneficiary lists, oversight of the full receipt–storage–transport chain, and distribution points organised for easy access while safeguarding families' privacy and dignity throughout.

The work does not end when items change hands. SAFE's field teams monitor distributions and verify on the ground that assistance reaches those entitled to it, backed by a functioning community accountability system and grievance mechanism through which beneficiaries can raise concerns and receive a response.

Partnership for Human Dignity

The project is a working model of multilateral cooperation: Swedish and Korean funding, UN oversight, and Palestinian implementation grounded in deep field expertise. It forms part of a growing partnership portfolio between SAFE and UNDP that spans housing rehabilitation, transitional shelter, debris management, and support to the most vulnerable across the Gaza Strip's governorates.

Every mattress means safe sleep for a family. Every dignity kit means health and privacy protected. Each is a step toward a more stable, dignified, and hopeful life.
