Stronger Transitional Shelter Solutions to Improve Living Conditions in Displacement Sites

Access to safe and stable shelter is one of the biggest challenges facing displaced families in the Gaza Strip. Continuous displacement, together with heavy rain, strong winds, and harsh weather conditions, has caused many traditional tents to become damaged and no longer provide adequate protection. This increases the daily hardship faced by families, affects their safety and privacy, and makes it more difficult for them to cope with prolonged displacement.

In response to these needs, SAFE is implementing the Wooden Tent Design and Installation Project in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme / Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP), with funding from the Government of the Republic of Korea. The project aims to replace damaged and worn-out tents with stronger wooden tents that provide safer and more stable living conditions for displaced families.

Project Objectives

The project aims to provide more sustainable transitional shelter solutions by designing and installing wooden tents that offer better protection, help families cope with harsh weather conditions, and improve stability in displacement sites.

The project also aims to:

• Replace damaged and worn-out tents with stronger wooden tents.
• Improve living conditions in camps and displacement sites.
• Provide better protection from rain, wind, and other weather conditions.
• Create a safer and more private living space for displaced families.
• Support family stability during displacement.
• Contribute to early recovery efforts in the Gaza Strip.

Project Design

The project is based on the design and installation of wooden tents built with a wooden frame covered with waterproof tarpaulin, providing greater strength and stability than traditional tents and improving living conditions for displaced families.

SAFE develops the engineering design of the tents to meet the needs of families and the local conditions in Gaza. The design focuses on easy installation, efficient use of available materials, improved safety and durability, better ventilation, and a more suitable internal living space.

This design provides a practical transitional shelter solution that combines fast implementation, efficient use of resources, and stronger protection against harsh weather, helping families live in safer and more stable conditions.

Scope of the Project

The project includes the design and installation of 950 wooden tents across 18 locations throughout the Gaza Strip.

Implementation is based on field assessments and carried out in coordination with government authorities, project partners, community committees, and local stakeholders to ensure that support reaches the areas with the greatest needs.

SAFE's Role

The Gaza Society for Sustainable Agriculture and Friendly Environment (SAFE) leads all stages of the project, starting with field needs assessments, developing the engineering design of the tents, selecting project locations, and providing full engineering supervision throughout installation and handover.

SAFE also coordinates with government institutions, project partners, community committees, host communities, and beneficiary families to ensure that the project is implemented efficiently and responds to local needs.

SAFE's engineering teams supervise all installation activities, monitor quality, verify that all tents meet the required technical standards, and ensure that every tent is safe before it is handed over to beneficiaries.

This reflects SAFE's engineering expertise in developing practical shelter solutions that match local conditions while combining quality, rapid response, and sustainability to improve the lives of affected families.

Beneficiaries

The project targets displaced families living in camps whose tents have been damaged or are no longer suitable for living because of rain, wind, and harsh weather conditions.

Special attention is given to the most vulnerable groups, including women-headed households, large families, older people, and persons with disabilities, to provide them with safer and more stable shelter that meets their basic needs.

Expected Impact

The project helps improve living conditions in displacement sites by providing stronger and more stable wooden tents that offer better protection from harsh weather and improve safety and privacy for displaced families.

It also reduces the need for frequent repairs and replacement of damaged tents, providing a more sustainable transitional shelter solution for displaced families.

Beyond providing shelter, the project supports the psychological and social well-being of families, improves the quality of life in displacement sites, and contributes to early recovery efforts across the Gaza Strip.
