As the movement of return from the southern Gaza Strip to Gaza City widened, so did the number of families finding themselves in damaged homes with no food stocks and no purchasing power, in depleted markets where the price of fresh food had climbed well beyond an ordinary household's reach.

Responding to that scale, the Gaza Society for Sustainable Agriculture and Friendly Environment (SAFE) significantly expanded its intervention, distributing 829 fresh vegetable parcels to families returning to Gaza City, through a donation from the Holy Family Church funded by World Central Kitchen (WCK), on 1 March 2025.

Operational Capacity, Tested in a Single Day

Distributing 829 fresh vegetable parcels within a single day is a complex logistical operation. Fresh produce is perishable and tolerates neither delay nor poor storage, which demands precise synchronisation across sourcing, sorting, assembly, transport, and distribution points alongside pre-verified beneficiary lists and field teams ready to move. Achieving that in one day is a genuine indicator of the organisation's operational capability rather than simply a distribution figure.

It is worth noting that the beneficiary figure is precise and unrounded — 829 families — reflecting distribution based on field-verified beneficiary lists rather than estimated targets.

Why Fresh Vegetables?

Because they are the gap conventional food baskets cannot fill. Canned and dry goods provide calories, but not the vitamins, fibre, and dietary diversity that children, pregnant women, and older people need. In a return context of high prices, fresh vegetables are the first item a family strikes from its shopping list.

As an organisation with an agricultural identity, SAFE sees the provision of fresh food as a natural extension of its mission.

SAFE's Role

SAFE delivered the intervention in full, without an implementing partner: identifying returning families against need-based criteria and preparing and verifying beneficiary lists, sourcing produce and assembling parcels to ensure quality and freshness, and organising field distribution in a way that preserved families' dignity and ensured items arrived in good condition and on time.

For fifty dollars, fresh produce reached a returning family's table. And across more than 1,800 families in four rounds, solidarity became a sustained commitment.
